We are still in the early stages of the third phase of the development of Calgary’s Arts Plan. Several key themes have emerged in the work we have done together to date (including the Phase I Dialogue Series, Phase II Citizens’ Reference Panel and the January 26th Summit). This document highlights those emerging themes and suggests a structure for the plan.
Everything in this document should be considered to be in draft form, subject to critique, change and/or deletion. As well, we know important things are missing. We ask you to read it with both a critical and generative perspective.
As you work through the document, you can expect to encounter the following:
- imagineCALGARY is a long-term plan for our city. It is already endorsed by City Council and has key targets related to the arts. We are proposing to use these targets as overarching goals for this plan.
- At our summit, we discussed the arts sector. Several key themes were identified as important to take into consideration.
- Our work to date has uncovered some positive and negative influences on and key strengths of the arts in Calgary. Any plan should take these factors into account while setting its aspirations for the future.
- The plan itself will focus on two sets of outcomes: 1) how will Calgary be different as a result of the plan; 2) how will the arts be different as a result of the plan. We are noting the formation of an overall vision, as well as some key themes emerging in each of these areas. At the upcoming summit, there is an opportunity to expand on these themes and add new themes as appropriate. This is the time and place to put our wildest aspirations on the table.
We look forward to hearing your views, either in person at the next summit on February 21st, or through the comment section on ArtsPlan.ca.
